When you hear about ‘endurance’, you most likely think of motorcycles or bikes riding downhill at full speed. But the truth is those are by no means al the disciplines endurance entails. As a matter of fact we just found out about this amazing event that will take place in Patagonia this weekend. It is the 8th version of the Enduro Ecuestre de Torres del Paine, which will be held this Sunday 29th of April in Torres del Paine National Park.
In this activity, riders must cover long distances (60 to 160kms), going through several stages against the clock.
The challenge is to be sparing with the horse and the rider’s energy, so as to maintain an adequate pace during the whole race. To achieve this, the horses are checked up at all stages by vets so as to make sure that they are good conditions to continue the race. If when finishing the race, the horse’s heartbeats are above the maximum allowed, the rider is disqualified. This is why this competition is not only a matter of speed but also of strategy and planning, in this case in an amazing environment such as Torres del Paine.
The race is organized by Las Torres Hotel, Club Deportivo Cerro Paine, and the Enduro Ecuestre de Magallanes Association, and it is divided in three categories: Adults (over 18 years and 75 kg) 100 km (national), 80 km (national and FEI), and 40 km (national); Junio (over 10 and under 18 years) and junior FEI (from 4 to 18 years).
For those interested in taking part in this competition, Las Torres Hotel offers 3 and 4 night packages including transfers from Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales, and Calafate, meals, open bar, agrotourism in Estancia Cerro Negro with shearing exhibitions, and ‘asado al palo’, discounts in spa, entrance ticket to the park, enrollment in the race, horse rental, and many other activities.
